Ever find yourself on the
path of happiness
with not much care in the world
and the road is smooth, but
then you come to a crashing halt.
You tumble onto your face
and cut yourself everywhere.
Large bruises appear
and you wonder
"Why me?"
Therefore, you pick yourself up
and brush off the dust.
You patch yourself up
and continue on the road.
The road was never smooth.
There were always the bumps along the way.
The difference was whether
you were
looking up or
looking down.
Dark skies
Dark demeanor
Sluggish view
Sluggish movement
It's time for bed.
Bright skies
Bright demeanor
Energized and ready
Prepare yourself
I'm here to take on the day.
Dark skies
Like an enigma
The entire world to myself
with only the periodic cars
and beams of light
to cheer me on
Bright skies
Sluggish view
Too many cheerful people
I couldn't sleep.
I hope that it's dark again.
I'm in the middle of the road
cold and unmoving
just like road kill.
Cars continue to crush my bones
until I turn to dust
stained red.
I'm in the middle of the road
lost and weak
just like a runaway.
Cars continue to pass me
until my dignity
gets emptied out.
I'm in the middle of the road
scavenging and hungry
just like a vulture.
Cars viciously honk at me
until I get hit
and become road kill-
the prize that I feast on.
I'm in the middle of the road
protecting and guarding
just like a cross guard.
Cars gently stop as I do my job
encouraging the students to cross
as I become a barrier
between life and death.
I'm in the middle of an interse
This is the last leg.
The last trek
The last sprint
The last hoist
This is it.
Continue on
Run faster
Keep going
This is it.
Afterwards, you stand victorious
and shout
"I made it!"
There is no right answer.
The only answer is left.
Rocks and pebbles fall from the sky
and I manage to catch them all
without a cut or bruise.
Laughter springs into the air
only to be shot down by menacing glares.
Sauntering away and from now on
all laughter is to be suppressed
until more glares are distributed
because of the silence and polite smiles.
Eggs and vases fall from the sky
and they smash all over the ground.
I manage to dodge them all,
but what a mess!
I say ape-row-cot
you say ap-ri-cot.
Either way, someone will glare
and we will suppress our pain
to become a solid mix
when we're all too polar
to try to blend.
Down the street
Through the door
Into my mother's arms
Created and knew me
Died for my sins
Worship His name
Scraped knee
Tears falling
Dad puts on a band-aid and
Mom kisses it better
Broken heart and shattered soul
He holds me hand and says
"I will never leave you."
I become stronger under His love.

A Conversation with Anxiety
"You ruin me!"
I shout with my teeth
bared and eyes wide.
"I can live my life because of you!"
I cry as fear trembles through my body.
"This is so difficult!"
I say as I slump into the corner.
"I feel so worthless!"
I shout as pain shoots through my chest.
"Why does this have to happen?"
I sob as I punch the wall.
I go through this dialogue
every other week or
daily or
hourly.
A conversation with anxiety.
My second language is Chinese
and yours may be English.
My first language my be kindness
and yours may be great jokes.
I stumble over some words or I
can't find the correct word to match
what I want to say.
I speak softly and I often
have to repeat myself.
I may mispronounce things or
my grammar might be off.
People may take advantage of me
or misunderstand me.
People may think that's all I am
when I am so much more.
Don't underestimate me
because I am so much more
than what you see.
A dim glow in
a stark, dark hallway.
I stumble slightly, but
I focus on the
glow.
My feet catches on something,
but I step around it and
continue down the hall.
Something brushes my face.
Shivers run down my spine, but I
Stumble forward.
The light grows larger
and my smile grows as well.
Fear melts away and
I stay near the light
even if it may just be a
night light.
